RSD/CRPS

Lexington, Kentucky

Reflexive sympathetic dystrophy (RSD), also commonly called complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a neurological disorder that can affect your skin, muscles, bones, and joints. The causes of RSD include:

This severely painful condition can often be brought about by serious injuries sustained through someone else’s negligence. It may be a secondary result of injuries caused by automobile accidents, pedestrian accidents, slip and fall accidents, and any other accident where damages are done to your bones or joints. No matter the cause, the long term pain, suffering, and associated medical expenses related to treating RSD can have a serious impact on your family’s finances and life.

Symptoms of RSD/CRPS

Diagnosing RSD can be difficult because it has a wide range of symptoms and many of them are similar to other neurological disorders. One key indication that you are suffering from RSD is the way in which this disorder progresses. There are three stages to the progression of RSD:

  • Acute stage – For the first few months following your injury, you may notice burning, increased sensitivity, swelling, joint pain, and accelerated hair and nail growth in the affected region.
  • Dystrophic stage – Three to six months later, you may experience constant pain and swelling, a bluish color to the skin, signs of bone loss, and stiffness or complete atrophy in the affected area.
  • Atrophic stage – The skin around the affected area may become cold and shiny while you lose more control over the muscles. It is during this stage that RSD/CRPS may begin to expand into other areas of your body.

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, it is important that you seek medical assistance immediately. The sooner medical professionals can diagnose RSD, the better your chances of controlling the disorder and preventing its spread.
